Mauna Loa sunrise on December 29, 2020

Color photograph of shield volcano

Detailed Description

Mauna Loa is not erupting but it remains at volcano alert-level ADVISORY and aviation color-code YELLOW. You can read more about the USGS Volcano Alert-Level System here. Mauna Loa's alert-level and aviation color-code were raised in July 2019 and remain elevated because Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements continue to show slow, long-term summit inflation, consistent with magma supply to the volcano's shallow storage system. Monitoring data, however, do not indicate that a Mauna Loa eruption is imminent. This photo was taken from one of the KÄ«lauea eruption-monitoring locations within the closed area of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. USGS photo on 12/29/2020 by L. DeSmither.
