Particulate organic matter from ocean water samples captured on filter
Detailed Description
Particulate organic matter (POM) primarily consists of non-living organic matter but can include living organisms, like phytoplankton, zooplankton, and bacteria. POM is found in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. USGS scientists collect water samples from the ocean and filter the water; the filter captures POM and is taken back to the lab for stable isotope analyses.
