Detailed Description

Plate tectonics of the Solomon Islands region

Single white arrows show direction of downgoing plate toward Pacific plate. Double diverging arrows show spreading direction across the Woodlark Ridge that separates the Woodlark and Australian plates. Approximate area of the fault that ruptured during the April 2007 earthquake is shown in the hachure pattern. Primary bathymetric contour interval is 1000 meters; secondary interval is 200 meters.
