Qdai Dome, lower center, located within the Newberry caldera
Detailed Description
Qdai Dome (lower center in the foreground) is highlighted by the sun in this aerial photo of Newberry Volcano’s eastern caldera lake in winter. Qdai, meaning "rock" (Klamath Tribes), aptly describes the exposed rocky surface of this postglacial rhyolite dome in the southern part of Newberry caldera. Its lava flow reached the south shore of East Lake (pictured in the middle distance), later buried (mostly) by the younger Mazama ash that was deposited when Mount Mazama erupted to form Crater Lake and Newberry pumice from the initial phase of the ~1300-year-old Big Obsidian Flow eruption. View is to the northeast.
