R/V Sallenger tows SQUID-5

A small research vessel tows scientific equipment over bright blue water with another boat in the background

Detailed Description

The R/V Sallenger tows the SQUID-5 over Looe Key reef with a NOAA Sanctuary boat in the background patrolling the Looe Key area to warn recreational vessels of the ongoing research activity.

The SQUID-5, or a Structure-from-Motion (SfM) Quantitative Underwater Imaging Device with 5 cameras is a towed surface vehicle with an onboard Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and 5 downward-looking cameras with overlapping views of the seafloor. This advanced underwater imaging system is specifically designed to allow the construction of high resolution (sub-centimeter) 3D models of the seafloor using SfM techniques.
