Detailed Description

Coral reef restoration can protect hundreds of millions of dollars of coastal property and business activity annually from storm-driven flooding.

It can protect thousands of people, especially children, the elderly, minorities, and those below the poverty line. Thus, coral reef restoration is a mechanism to provide environmental equity.

And lastly, it can be cost-effective. Because the hazard risk-reduction benefits, in terms of dollars and lives, of restoring or enhancing coral reefs is greater than the cost to do that restoration and enhancement, it makes the hundreds of millions of dollars of pre-disaster mitigation funds or post-disaster recovery funds—available in the U.S. for protecting coasts—to also be used for restoring coral reefs, which thus helps the economy through tourism and fisheries dollars, too, above and beyond the coastal protection values.
