TRAILS (Trail Routing, Analysis, and Information Linkage System) Updates
Recent improvements to the geospatial trail routing analysis include the incorporation of user-defined custom areas, ability to highlight potential switchback areas, use of the “live” USGS trails data, and the addition of railroads, as well as improved project sharing.

Sustainable trail planning supports visitor use and minimizes trail maintenance needs.

Status of the Nationwide Digital Trails Dataset
The Board on Geographic Names has updated almost 650 derogatory names deemed “offensive ethnic slurs” based on the Secretary of the Interior’s Order 3404. In addition to geographic feature updates, the USGS has been working to ensure trail and other names have been updated as well.
Trail Data Portal – Streamlining Trail Data Integration
The USGS will be releasing the Trail Data Portal in 2023 for external user testing and feedback.
Update on Federal Trails Schema
An interagency group has been working to create a Federal GIS Trail Schema based on the FGDC Federal Trail Data Standard. The schema is scheduled to be released by the end of 2023.
