Several GLSC scientists hosted Michigan’s Great Lakes Area of Concern (AOC) Public Advisory Council (PAC) for a tour of the Ann Arbor lab and discussions on GLSC science support to the AOC program. The PAC is made up mostly of staff from the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes AOC program and representatives from local AOC advisory committees. Michigan’s 14 AOCs are designated as such due to legacy degradation and contamination in mostly urban, river-mouth communities. The PAC and the local advisory committees are tasked with implementing the federal AOC program to remediate and revitalize these valuable coastal communities. The USGS provides technical science assistance at many of the 32 Great Lakes AOCs.
