Data Releases
The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Sediment chemistry in nearshore Bellingham Bay, urban creeks and the Nooksack River, Puget Sound, Washington, March and September 2019 Sediment chemistry in nearshore Bellingham Bay, urban creeks and the Nooksack River, Puget Sound, Washington, March and September 2019
Concentrations of individual polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and chlorinated pesticides are reported for surface sediments collected along the nearshore of Bellingham Bay, the Nooksack River, and four urban creeks discharging to Bellingham Bay in March 2019. Additional samples were collected along the nearshore urban waterfront corridor...
Cladophora biomass and supporting data collected in the Great Lakes, 2024 (ver. 2.0, February 2026) Cladophora biomass and supporting data collected in the Great Lakes, 2024 (ver. 2.0, February 2026)
This dataset records Cladophora and associated benthic algae, collectively the Cladophora community or submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), biomass collected during the growing season of 2024 at stations located along the U.S. shoreline of Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. It also records a variety of supporting data collected at Cladophora measurement stations. These supporting...
Hydrogeologic provinces of the conterminous United States Hydrogeologic provinces of the conterminous United States
This data release contains shapefiles of the hydrogeologic provinces of the conterminous United States. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is developing a National Extent Hydrogeologic Framework (NEHF). In support of that effort, the conterminous United States was subdivided into eight hydrogeologic provinces that are generally based on geologic provinces and subprovinces...
Investigation of Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) Burrowing Behavior Investigation of Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) Burrowing Behavior
This study used artificial burrowing chambers to investigate the effects of groundwater drainage rates and soil type on burrow initiation and morphology of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). The relationship between caloric density of crayfish and burrowing was also examined. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the effect of ground water drainage rates on burrowing...
Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Data for Oil Samples from the Bemidji Oil Spill Research Site, 1987-2020 Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Data for Oil Samples from the Bemidji Oil Spill Research Site, 1987-2020
The USGS is conducting a long-term study of a terrestrial crude oil spill that resulted from a ruptured pipeline in 1979. Samples of oil bailed from wells were analyzed for polyaromatic hydrocarbons by a commercial lab. A total of 32 samples were analyzed in three batches. A sample that serves as a surrogate for the original spilled oil was submitted with each batch. For each oil sample
High-resolution land cover mapping along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts to enhance hurricane coastal impact models High-resolution land cover mapping along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts to enhance hurricane coastal impact models
To enhance hurricane coastal impact models, we developed 1-m land cover maps for the coastal portions of states along the Gulf of America and Atlantic coasts using recent (2018–2020) high-resolution orthoimagery and moderate-resolution land cover maps. Our first step was to develop land cover maps with three classes (vegetated, unvegetated, water) using recently acquired 1-m orthoimagery...
