Evaluation of Network Tools to Advance Climate Adaptation in the Southwest Active

The complex challenge of adapting to climate changerequires collaborative solutions that can be enhanced by connecting individuals to each other and to essential information. This project will evaluate the effectiveness of online decision information tools designed to aid adaptation, that are supported by the development of a network of practice. Networks can aid adaptation by improving the quantity and quality of professional relationships, mobilizing leadership, enhancing the flow of information and generating more actions that lead to adaptation breakthroughs. Many new networks in the Southwest have developed online tools to inform adaptation planning and natural resource management. In this project, we will evaluate five network tools, to better understand the uses and barriers to use of these tools by natural resource professionals, with the goal of providing guidance to increase the effectiveness of network tools to achieve adaptation outcomes. To evaluate the network tools, we will conduct interviews and surveys with network coordinators and network tool users. We will analyze interview and survey data for evidence of the benefits of and barriers to tool use, and for evidence of the credibility of information and output from the tools, capacity for learning through use of the tools, and skills or expertise gained through the use of the tools. We will use social network analysis methods to visualize connectivity among the network participants and how that leads to learning, collaboration, and partnerships. We anticipate that network tools have enhanced information flows and maintained or enhanced connectivity among participants during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our evaluation report and summary webinar will bring multiple benefits to network coordinators, stakeholders, and funders by sharing insights about network tool uses, challenges and opportunities, and how network tools can be improved and enhanced.
