Evaluation of long-term gas hydrate production testing locations on the Alaska North Slope Evaluation of long-term gas hydrate production testing locations on the Alaska North Slope
The results of short duration formation tests in northern Alaska and Canada have further documented the energy resource potential of gas hydrates and justified the need for long-term gas hydrate production testing. Additional data acquisition and long-term production testing could improve the understanding of the response of naturally-occurring gas hydrate to depressurization-induced or...

Digital signal processing and interpretation of full waveform sonic log for well BP-3-USGS, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Alamosa County, Colorado Digital signal processing and interpretation of full waveform sonic log for well BP-3-USGS, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Alamosa County, Colorado
Along the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve boundary (fig. 1), 10 monitoring wells were drilled by the National Park Service in order to monitor water flow in an unconfined aquifer spanning the park boundary. Adjacent to the National Park Service monitoring well named Boundary Piezometer Well No. 3, or BP-3, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) drilled the BP-3-USGS well. This...

Connection equation and shaly-sand correction for electrical resistivity Connection equation and shaly-sand correction for electrical resistivity
Estimating the amount of conductive and nonconductive constituents in the pore space of sediments by using electrical resistivity logs generally loses accuracy where clays are present in the reservoir. Many different methods and clay models have been proposed to account for the conductivity of clay (termed the shaly-sand correction). In this study, the connectivity equation (CE), which...

Sedimentology and reservoir heterogeneity of a valley-fill deposit– A field guide to the Dakota Sandstone of the San Rafael Swell, Utah Sedimentology and reservoir heterogeneity of a valley-fill deposit– A field guide to the Dakota Sandstone of the San Rafael Swell, Utah
Valley-fill deposits form a significant class of hydrocarbon reservoirs in many basins of the world. Maximizing recovery of fluids from these reservoirs requires an understanding of the scales of fluid-flow heterogeneity present within the valley-fill system. The Upper Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone in the San Rafael Swell, Utah contains well exposed, relatively accessible outcrops that...

Geophysical setting of the February 21, 2008 Mw 6 Wells earthquake, Nevada, and implications for earthquake hazards Geophysical setting of the February 21, 2008 Mw 6 Wells earthquake, Nevada, and implications for earthquake hazards
We utilize gravity and magnetic methods to investigate the regional geophysical setting of the Wells earthquake. In particular, we delineate major crustal structures that may have played a role in the location of the earthquake and discuss the geometry of a nearby sedimentary basin that may have contributed to observed ground shaking. The February 21, 2008 Mw 6.0 Wells earthquake...

Definition of potential unconventional oil and gas resource accumulations, onshore Thailand Definition of potential unconventional oil and gas resource accumulations, onshore Thailand
Conventional accumulations represent oil and gas accumulations that are buoyant upon a water column, whereas unconventional accumulations generally do not rely on buoyancy.

Gas hydrate prospecting using well cuttings and mud-gas geochemistry from 35 wells, North Slope, Alaska Gas hydrate prospecting using well cuttings and mud-gas geochemistry from 35 wells, North Slope, Alaska
Gas hydrate deposits are common on the North Slope of Alaska around Prudhoe Bay; however, the extent of these deposits is unknown outside of this area. As part of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Bureau of Land Management gas hydrate research collaboration, well-cutting and mud-gas samples have been collected and analyzed from mainly industry-drilled wells on the North Slope for the...

Paleogene coal deposits of the Wilcox group and the Indio formation of south Texas Paleogene coal deposits of the Wilcox group and the Indio formation of south Texas
Coal deposits of the undivided Wilcox Group and its southern equivalent Indio Formation (Paleogene) of south Texas are among the coal resources that are not evaluated quantitatively in the current Gulf Coastal Plain coal re-source assessment. South Texas Wilcox and Indio coals have not been extensively mined, nor have they been mined commercially for at least the past 60 years. These...

Bibliography of the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain coal geology Bibliography of the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain coal geology
Unlike scientific literature pertaining to most other coal-bearing regions in the conterminous United States, this bibliography on the coal geology of the Gulf Coastal Plain is dominated by work from the late 20th century. Although coals of this region were mined commercially in the late 1800s and early 1900s, they were eclipsed by the production and use of oil and gas in the middle...

Assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources of the Williston Basin Province of North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota, 2010 Assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources of the Williston Basin Province of North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota, 2010
Using a geology-based assessment method, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated mean undiscovered volumes of 3.8 billion barrels of undiscovered oil, 3.7 trillion cubic feet of associated/dissolved natural gas, and 0.2 billion barrels of undiscovered natural gas liquids in the Williston Basin Province, North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently...

Assessment of undiscovered conventional oil and gas resources of Thailand Assessment of undiscovered conventional oil and gas resources of Thailand
The U.S. Geological Survey estimated mean volumes of 1.6 billion barrels of undiscovered conventional oil and 17 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered conventional natural gas in three geologic provinces of Thailand using a geology-based methodology. Most of the undiscovered conventional oil and gas resource is estimated to be in the area known as offshore Thai Basin province.
