U.S. Geological Survey geoheritage sites of the nation: Broadening the relevance of geologic mapping through the intersection of geology and society

Geoheritage lies at the intersection of geology and society (NASEM 2021). It is a value-laden term applied to geologically significant features and landforms to highlight the scientific, educational, cultural, economic, and aesthetic values that society places on them (Brilha 2018, GSA 2017, NPS and AGI 2015). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) proposed the development of a geoheritage geospatial product (GGP) to broaden the relevance of geologic mapping to stakeholders within the scientific community and the public (Shelton et al. 2022). To accomplish this, the USGS Geoheritage Sites of the Nation project was initiated to design the GGP and build a geoheritage site inventory to showcase geodiversity and natural heritage throughout the United States and its territories to accompany the seamless 2D and 3D geologic map and model being developed by the NCGMP and its partners (DeVera et al. 2022). The GGP serves as an educational and outreach tool to 1) raise awareness of significant geologic sites, 2) communicate the role of geology in our natural heritage, and 3) increase accessibility and relevance of geologic mapping and geoscience topics more broadly to the public (DeVera et al. 2023b).
