Short-term cold storage of Atlantic sturgeon sperm Short-term cold storage of Atlantic sturgeon sperm
Short‐term cold storage of fish sperm with oxygen, an established fisheries technique, was successfully used to preserve milt from Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus oxyrhynchus). All milt samples stored for 5 d on ice and replenished daily with oxygen retained at least 80% motility and at least 99% viability. One sample exhibited 40% motility after 17 d. For management personnel...

National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program, Long Island-New Jersey (LINJ) Coastal Drainages Study Unit National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program, Long Island-New Jersey (LINJ) Coastal Drainages Study Unit
In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began its National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA ) program to (1) document the quality of a large, representative part of the Nation's water resources; (2) define water-quality trends; and (3) identify major factors that affect water quality. In addressing these goals, the program will produce information that will be useful to water policy...

Hydrogeology and paths of flow in the carbonate bedrock aquifer, northwestern Indiana Hydrogeology and paths of flow in the carbonate bedrock aquifer, northwestern Indiana
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is assessing the ground.water resources of the carbonate bedrock aquifers in Indiana and Ohio as part of their Regional Aquifer Systems Analysis program. Part of this assessment includes the determination of unknown aspects of the hydraulic characteristics, boundaries, and flow paths of the carbonate aquifer. To accomplish this, the USGS drilled three...

Strontium Strontium
Production figures are not published for stronium carbonate because there is only one company producing strontium carbonate domestically. Strontium carbonate is produced in the U.S. from imported celestite. Consumption can be estimated from trade data published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Consumption is estimated at approximately 24.5 kt of strontium. The largest end-use of...

Fluorspar Fluorspar
The U.S. exported approximately 52 kt of fluorspar in 1993. All reported production of fluorspar came from the Illinois mines of Elf Atochem. The U.S. consumed approximately 439 kt of fluorspar, according to preliminary U.S. Bureau of Mines figures. Fluorspar markets and industry developments are discussed.

Habitat use by an endangered riverine fish and implications for species protection Habitat use by an endangered riverine fish and implications for species protection
We investigated habitat specificity of the amber darter (Percina antesella Williams & Etnier 1977), an imperiled fish from restricted portions of 2 rivers in the southeastern United States. Foraging amber darters occupied a narrow range of riffle habitat, consistently avoiding areas 20 cm deep and with velocity 10 cm. s-1 near the substrate, occupying areas with cobble or gravel...

Buffer zones of territories of gray wolves as regions of intraspecific strife Buffer zones of territories of gray wolves as regions of intraspecific strife
The locations of 22 territorial gray wolves (Canis lupus) killed by conspecifics in northeastern Minnesota were analyzed in a study involving radio-telemetry from 1968 through 1992. Twenty-three percent of the wolves were killed precisely on the borders of their estimated territories; 41%, within 1.0 km (16% of the radius of their mean-estimated territory) inside or outside the estimated...
