Effects of acidic deposition on water quality and forest health in Georgia Effects of acidic deposition on water quality and forest health in Georgia
Biogeochemical studies at the Panola Mountain Research Watershed near Atlanta, Ga., and in the Coastal Plain Province of Georgia have provided an assessment of some of the potential effects of acid deposition on streamwater quality and forest health in Georgia. Historically, "acid rain" has not been considered a potentially serious problem in the southeastern United States; however...

Capture myopathy in a captive Black-bellied Whistling Duck Capture myopathy in a captive Black-bellied Whistling Duck
A female captive-raised Black-bellied Whistling Duck exhibited signs of capture myopathy within 24 hours after a strenuous capture. Serum creatine kinase activity 48 hrs after capture was 23,680 IU/L and aspartate aminotransferase activity was 898 IU/L. Postmortem lesions included large, pale areas of muscle tissue in the hind limbs and heart. Histologic lesions of skeletal muscle...

Effects of a crude oil spill on the benthic invertebrate community in the Gasconade River, Missouri Effects of a crude oil spill on the benthic invertebrate community in the Gasconade River, Missouri
Effects of a 3.3-million–L crude oil spill on the benthic macroinvertebrate community of the Gasconade River, a large river in Missouri, were evaluated by comparing several macroinvertebrate community indices in riffle and backwater habitats above and below the spill. Concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in sediments decreased dramatically in riffle habitats within 6...

Occurrence and Distribution of Organochlorine Compounds in Biological Tissue and Bed Sediment From Streams in the Trinity River Basin, Texas, 1992-93 Occurrence and Distribution of Organochlorine Compounds in Biological Tissue and Bed Sediment From Streams in the Trinity River Basin, Texas, 1992-93
This report describes the occurrence and distribution of organochlorine compounds in biological tissue and bed sediment from the Trinity River Basin study area of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program. Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other organochlorine compounds were determined in biological tissue and surficial bed sediment...

Floods of September 15-16, 1992, in the Thompson, Weldon, and Chariton River basins, south-central Iowa Floods of September 15-16, 1992, in the Thompson, Weldon, and Chariton River basins, south-central Iowa
Water-surface-elevation profiles and peak discharges for the floods of September 15-16, 1992, in the Thompson, Weldon, and Chariton River Basins, south-central Iowa, are presented in this report. The profiles illustrate the 1992 floods along the Thompson, Weldon, Chariton, and South Fork Chariton Rivers and along Elk Creek in the south-central Iowa counties of Adair, Clarke, Decatur...

Water-supply potential of major streams and the Upper Floridan Aquifer in the vicinity of Savannah, Georgia Water-supply potential of major streams and the Upper Floridan Aquifer in the vicinity of Savannah, Georgia
Surface- and ground-water resources in the Savannah, Georgia, area were evaluated for potential water-supply development. Stream-discharge and water-quality data were analyzed for two major streams considered to be viable water-supply sources. A ground-water flow model was developed to be used in conjunction with other previously calibrated models to simulate the effects of additional...

Simulation of ground-water flow in southeastern Coastal Plain clastic aquifers in Georgia and adjacent parts of Alabama and South Carolina Simulation of ground-water flow in southeastern Coastal Plain clastic aquifers in Georgia and adjacent parts of Alabama and South Carolina
Ground-water-flow systems within the clastic sediments of the southeastern Coastal Plain have been described and quantified through the application of digital ground-water-flow models. Results indicate that the rates and distribution of flow are highly variable, and that regional flowpaths in two aquifers traverse several States. A hydrologic budget was developed which quantitatively...
