Collaboration among SAFRR, Art Center College of Design, and other partners produced this tsunami awareness video, targeted for the 18-34 year old audience.
SAFRR asked students at the Designmatters program at Art Center College of Design to develop a video, a 1-minute public service announcement to increase tsunami awareness among 18-34 year olds. Studies show that this age group is difficult to reach by conventional preparedness messaging - but worth the effort, because they are more likely than most other age groups to take action, once reached. SAFRR brought in experts from natural and behavioral sciences, emergency management, education, and public health to brief the students about tsunami issues, and work with the class to ensure accurate scientific content.
Staged as a live-action cartoon, “The First Sue Nami”, focuses on how to know a tsunami may be coming and what to do about it. Liesel Ritchie at the University of Colorado, Boulder led an evaluation of the effectiveness (2Mb PDF) of the video in reaching the target audience and providing tsunami safety information that could be understood and remembered.
