Geologic Framework Mapping

Geologic maps show the distribution of different types of rocks.

An example of a geologic map. This one was developed by Earth MRI for the Castle Rock area in Arizona.

Geologic maps are fundamental for exploring potential resources, identifying and mitigating natural hazards, and planning for agriculture and infrastructure.

To create geologic maps, geologists begin by identifying and measuring visible rock in the mapping area. Using these measurements and their understanding of geologic processes, geologists then predict how different “units” of rocks fit together beneath the Earth’s surface.

Together with geochemical, geophysical and other data, geologists continue to improve these predictions. Geologic maps are often used to estimate where mineral and energy resources, and natural hazards, might exist.

We conduct geologic mapping through partnerships with State geological surveys.
