Greg Matthews

Greg is the UE Published Maps Products and Services Focus Area Coordinator.

Greg Matthews has been with the USGS since 2008 and currently works for The User Engagement Office of the National Geospatial Program as the UE Published Maps Products and Services Focus Area Coordinator.  Past positions at the USGS include working for the NGTOC as the Transportation National Partner Support Lead, Project Manager for The National Map Corps, and in the Innovations Office as an Applied Researcher. Previous professional GIS work includes GIS Database Manager and GIS project management for the City of Castle Rock, Colorado, and a GIS Analyst and project management at Parsons Engineering.

  • Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management from Kansas State University

Volunteer map data collection at the USGS

Since 1994, citizen volunteers have helped the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) improve its topographic maps. Through the Earth Science Corps program, citizens were able to "adopt a quad" and collect new information and update existing map features. Until its conclusion in 2001, as many as 300 volunteers annotated paper maps which were incorporated into the USGS topographic-map revision process.
