Mineral resource potential map of the South Sierra Wilderness and the South Sierra Roadless Area, Inyo and Tulare Counties, California
There are five areas with mineral resource potential and one area with geothermal energy potential in the South Sierra Wilderness and the South Sierra Roadless Area. The area south of Summit Meadows and the area south of Hogback Creek have moderate resource potential for tungsten and molybdenum in small skarn deposits. The area between Summit meadow and Hogback Creek and the area from...
Map and interpretation of geochemical anomalies in the White Mountains, Blanco Mountain, Birch Creek, and Black Canyon Roadless Areas, White Mountains, California and Nevada
The geochemical results show the most anomalous part of the study area to be the White Mountain Fault zone along the northwestern range front. Silver, lead, and zinc mineralization in calcareous rocks, porphyry copper in dikes, gold-arsenic quartz vein deposits, tungsten and molybdenum tactite mineralization, and argillic alteration zones are indicated. Titanium and molybdenum were...
Mineral resource potential map of the Blanco Mountain and Black Canyon Roadless Areas, Inyo and Mono Counties, California
On the basis of geologic, geochemical, and geophysical investigations and a survey of mines and prospects, the mineral resource potential for gold, silver, lead, zinc, tungsten, and barite of the Blanco Mountain and Black Canyon Roadless Areas is judged to be low to moderate, except for one local area that has high potential for gold and tungsten resources. A geochemical survey detected...
Maps and interpretation of geochemical anomalies in the John Muir Wilderness, Fresno, Inyo, Madera and Mono counties, California
A geochemical survey of the John Muir Wilderness was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1969 and 1978. The 755-mi2 (1,956-km2) wilderness is located in the central Sierra Nevada, Calif. (fig. 1). Stream-sediment samples were collected at 1,434 sites in the wilderness and immediately adjacent areas. Analytical data for these samples and a map of smapling sites are presented...

The saltiest springs in the Sierra Nevada, California
The five saltiest springs in the Sierra Nevada in California are found between 38.5° and 38.8° N. latitude, on the South Fork American River; on Caples Creek, a tributary of the Silver Fork American River; and on the North Fork Mokelumne River. The springs issue from Cretaceous granitic rocks in the bottoms of these major canyons, between 1,200- and 2,200-m elevation. All of these...

Hand-hewn granite basins at Native American saltworks, Sierra Nevada, California
This site in the northern Sierra Nevada contains about 369 circular basins carved in fresh, glaciated granodioritic bedrock, with 325 basins crowded together in an area of 2,700 m2 on the main terrace. These terrace basins have a median average diameter of 125 cm (80 percent between 100 and 160 cm) and a median depth of 75–80 cm. They show a strong congruity to similar granitic basins in...

Selected Images of the Pu'u 'O'o-Kupaianaha Eruption, 1983-1997
The 100 images in this CD?ROM have been selected from the collections of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory as enduring favorites of the staff, researchers, media, designers, and the public over time. They represent photographs of a variety of geological phenomena and eruptive events, chosen for their content, quality of exposure, and aesthetic appeal. The number was kept to 100 to...

Sediment-hosted copper deposits of the world: Deposit models and database
Introduction This publication contains four descriptive models and four grade-tonnage models for sediment hosted copper deposits. Descriptive models are useful in exploration planning and resource assessment because they enable the user to identify deposits in the field and to identify areas on geologic and geophysical maps where deposits could occur. Grade and tonnage models are used in...

Volcanoes of the Wrangell Mountains and Cook Inlet region, Alaska: selected photographs
Alaska is home to more than 40 active volcanoes, many of which have erupted violently and repeatedly in the last 200 years. This CD-ROM contains 97 digitized color 35-mm images which represent a small fraction of thousands of photographs taken by Alaska Volcano Observatory scientists, other researchers, and private citizens. The photographs were selected to portray Alaska's volcanoes, to...
