Wisconsin StreamStats

StreamStats for Wisconsin was developed in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

StreamStats is available for Wisconsin on a limited basis. Currently, it allows users to select or enter a stream location, delineate the drainage basin for the selected location, and compute the following basin characteristics:

· Drainage area, in square miles;

· Percentage of land area that is forest from NLCD 2001 land-use classes 41-43;

· Percentage of land area that is storage in wetlands and water bodies from NLCD 2001 land-use classes 11, 90 and 95;

· Percentage of land area that is water from NLCD 2001 land-use class 11;

· Percentage of land area that is wetlands from NLCD 2001 land-use classes 90 and 95;

· Percentage of land area that is herbaceous upland from NLCD 2001 land-use class 71;

· Percentage of land area that is emergent herbaceous wetland from NLCD 2001 land-use class 95;

· Percentage of land area that is wooded wetlands from NLCD 2001 land-use class 90;

· Percentage of land area that is cultivated crops from NLCD 2001 land-use classes 81 and 82;

· Percentage of land area that is developed from NLCD 2001 land-use classes 21-24;

· Average soil permeability; in inches per hour

· Mean annual snowfall, in inches;

· Mean annual precipitation, in inches;

· Maximum 24-hour precipitation that occurs on average once in 2 years, in inches;

· Maximum 24-hour precipitation that occurs on average once in 5 years, in inches;

· Maximum 24-hour precipitation that occurs on average once in 10 years, in inches;

· Maximum 24-hour precipitation that occurs on average once in 25 years, in inches;

· Maximum 24-hour precipitation that occurs on average once in 50 years, in inches;

· Maximum 24-hour precipitation that occurs on average once in 100 years, in inches;

· 2-year climate factor from Litchy and Karlinger (1990), dimensionless;

· 25-year climate factor from Litchy and Karlinger (1990) , dimensionless;

· 100-year climate factor from Litchy and Karlinger (1990) , dimensionless; and

· Main channel slope determined as the change in elevation divided by length between points 10 and 85 percent of distance along main channel to basin divide, in feet per mile.

These basin characteristics will be tested for potential use as explanatory variables in an ongoing study to develop new regional regression equations for estimating peak flows at the 50-, 20-, 10, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities for user-selected sites on ungaged Wisconsin streams. The equations will be added to StreamStats after the report for the study is approved and made available on the Web.
