Post-fire recovery of California coastal sage scrub Post-fire recovery of California coastal sage scrub

Postfire regeneration of the shrub and herb vegetation on eight coastal slopes of California coastal sage scrub was studied in the first two growing seasons after fire. All shrub species resprouted with the exception of the suffrutescent Lotus scoparius, though it is not known if this species was alive prior to the fire. It was estimated that 70% of the prefire shrub populations...

Crassulacean acid metabolism in submerged aquatic plants Crassulacean acid metabolism in submerged aquatic plants

CO2-fixation in the dark is known to occur in various organs of many plants. However, only in species possessing crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) does dark CO2-fixation contribute substantially to the carbon economy of the plant. Until very recently CAM was known only from terrestrial species, largely drought adapted succulents. The discovery of CAM in the submerged aquatic fern ally...

Breeding biology of Pacific white-fronted geese Breeding biology of Pacific white-fronted geese

Nesting ecology of Pacific white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons frontalis) was studied on a 9.9-km2 area on the Yukon-Kuskokwim (Y-K) Delta, Alaska, during 1977-79. Availability of nesting habitat varied considerably among years because of differences in time of snow- and icemelt. Mean clutch size was 3.7 eggs in the late spring thaw year and 5.2 and 5.7 eggs in early snowmelt years...
