Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) impacts on BBL operations

As of March 17, 2020, most of the Bird Banding Lab (BBL) staff are teleworking to help reduce exposure to and potential spread of COVID-19. In order to maintain support for the banding community, we have prepared the following guidelines.

Processing new permit applications and requests for modifications to existing permits often involves in-person discussion among staff members. We are developing alternate procedures to accomplish these tasks remotely but we expect slower turn around times than are estimated on our website. To help us, please be sure to follow instructions on the BBL website regarding how to prepare permit requests, including to send all communications via In addition, please note:

  • Review of new permit applications and reactivation requests is currently suspended. 
  • Renewal requests for permits with delinquent data will not be processed until all data are submitted (Note this is standard BBL policy). 
  • Modification of existing permits will proceed as we are able, in the order that requests are received.

Band orders

We will continue to mail band orders as we are able and as long as our office is open.

  • All band orders must be placed using the Bander Portal (Note this is standard BBL policy).
  • Please do not place orders for more bands than you need.
  • Please do not return old inscription bands to us until further notice, so we can focus our time on distributing bands.
