AVHRR Orbital Segment Data Dictionary
The Data Dictionaries are a set of information describing the contents, format, and structure of elements for EarthExplorer products.
- Field Definition: The acquisition date refers to the year, month, and day the data was acquired.
- Field Definition: The start time (GMT) in hours, minutes, seconds when the data was acquired.
Format:
HH:MM:SS
- Field Definition: The stop time (GMT) in hours, minutes, seconds when the data was acquired.
Format:
HH:MM:SS
- Field Definition: A flag to indicate the status of the data in the EDC archive.
Values:
G = Good
X = Problem (multiple digital defects)
- Field Definition: The five characters in the field represent the number and order of the data bands that are present in the image. Example: 12000 - Data bands 1-2 are in the order of 1-5, the last three bands are zero filled.
- Field Definition: This flag indicates the availability of a browse image.
- Field Definition: The latitude and longitude are provided in decimal degrees for the following fields:
Values:
Scene Center Latitude and Longitude
Northeast (NE) Corner Latitude and Longitude
Northwest (NW) Corner Latitude and Longitude
Southeast (SE) Corner Latitude and Longitude
Southwest (SW) Corner Latitude and Longitude
Latitude Format Decimal Degrees: -90.000 through 90.000
Longitude Format Decimal Degrees: -180.000 through 180.000
Number of decimal places will vary by dataset – check collection in EE.
Coordinates - Degrees, Minutes, Seconds

Values:
Scene Center Latitude and Longitude
Northeast (NE) Corner Latitude and Longitude
Northwest (NW) Corner Latitude and Longitude
Southeast (SE) Corner Latitude and Longitude
Southwest (SW) Corner Latitude and Longitude
Longitude Format:
DDDMMSS.SSH
DDD = Degree(s) with a range of 0 through 180
MM = Minute(s) with a range of 0 through 59
SS.SS = Second(s) with a range of 0 through 59.99
H = Hemisphere with E for east and W for west
Latitude Format:
DDMMSS.SSH
DD = Degree(s) with a range of 0 through 90
MM = Minutes(s) with a range of 0 through 59
SS.SS = Second(s) with a range of 0 through 59.99
H = Hemisphere with N for north and S for south
- Field Definition: Date the metadata record was added or last updated in the database.
- Field Definition: This field indicates whether the data was acquired during a daytime or nighttime pass.
Values:
D = Day
N = Night
- Field Definition: The flag to indicate whether the data was acquired while in an ascending or descending orbit.
- Field Definition: The naming convention of each image is based on acquisition parameters.
Format:
AONNMMDDYYHHMMSS
AO = Data Set Identifier
NN = Satellite Number
MMDDYY = Acquisition date expressed in month, day, and year
HHMMSS = Acquisition start time expressed in hours, minutes, and seconds
Example:
AO14093099152513
- Field Definition: The orbit number associated with the data acquisition.
- Field Definition: This is the length of time in minutes from the start of an acquisition to the end of the acquisition. (Pass duration is truncated to full minutes, therefore a duration of 59 seconds will be expressed as 0 minutes in length.)
- Field Definition: The number of the NOAA satellite carrying the AVHRR sensor that acquired the data.
