USGS EROS Archive - ISRO Resourcesat 1 and Resourcesat 2 - AWiFS
The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) Resourcesat-1 (2003- present) and Resourcesat-2 (2011-present) satellites provide multispectral images at 24- (LISS-3) and 56- (AWiFS) meter resolution.
The Resourcesat-1 satellite was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on October 17, 2003, followed by Resourcesat-2 on April 20, 2011, to ensure systematic and repetitive coverage of the earth’s surface. The objective of these Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites is to provide data for integrated land and water resource management. A collaborative effort between ISRO and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides open access to Linear Imaging Self Scanning (LISS-3) sensor and Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS) data products through EarthExplorer.
Spectral Bands and Resolution
The instruments on the Resourcesat-1 (also known as IRS-P6) and Resourcesat-2 satellites acquire four spectral bands ranging from Visible and Near-Infrared (VNIR) to Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) wavelengths. The satellite operates in a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 817 km. The satellites take 101.35 minutes to complete one revolution around the earth and complete about 14 orbits per day. The entire earth is covered by 341 orbits during a 24-day cycle. The LISS-3 sensor covers a 140-km orbital swath at a spatial resolution of 24 meters with a 24-day repeat cycle. AWiFS covers a 740-km orbital swath at a resolution of 56 meters with a 5-day repeat cycle.

Processing Level
The partnership between ISRO and the USGS allows for the distribution of global data. Systematic Correction (Level-1G) includes radiometric and geometric corrections to generate highly accurate geolocated products. Precision Terrain Correction (Level-1T) provides a higher level of correction by registration to the Global Land Survey (GLS) and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for topographic accuracy.
IRS LISS-3 products are referenced to UTM/WGS84 (Universal Transverse Mercator/World Geodetic System 1984) projection and datum. AWiFS products are referenced to LCC/WGS84 (Lambert Conformal Conic/World Geodetic System 1984) projection and datum. The path/row reference grid is part of the IRS referencing scheme, which is unique for the Resourcesat satellite missions and identifies the geographic location of data on the earth.
Data Products
The USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center processes all ISRO data to Level-1G. Scenes with sufficient ground control data for terrain correction are processed to Level-1T. IRS image data are in Georeferenced Tagged Image File Format (GeoTIFF). The download package from the USGS includes one file for each of the 4 spectral bands plus metadata.
Full Resolution Browse (FRB) images in GeoTIFF are also available from the USGS for IRS LISS-3 and AWiFS tiles. This product is a simulated natural color composite image created from three selected bands (5, 4, 3).
IRS data products are free of charge to all data users including the general public, and scientific and commercial users.
