USGS scientists from FORT and NOROCK with the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) recently published the resulting data of a range-wide species distribution model for the tricolored bat (Perimyotis subflavus).

This multi-agency science effort integrated a combination of acoustic, live-capture, and winter roost data submitted to NABat and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) Permit Reporting Database. This novel modelling approach estimates bat abundance and occupancy at spatial resolutions as fine as 5 km (about 3 mi). Results from this analysis can be used by USFWS to inform conservation decision making and species recovery for the tricolored bat following the final rule on its proposed endangered listing. This analysis integrates the best available data, information, and knowledge about the tricolored bat and will be used to produce a ‘One Range’ map for the species available through the USFWS Environmental Conservation Online System.

Predictions of tricolored bat occupancy probabilities from the species distribution model has been published as a USGS data release and made available on ScienceBase. Associated data can be found here: Udell, B.J., Stratton, C., Straw, B.R., Irvine, K.M., Reichard, J.D., Gaulke, S.M., Coleman, J.T.H., Tousley, F., Schuhmann, A.N., Inman, R.D., Shively, R., Reichert, B.E. 2023.
