U.S. Federal research on fisheries and limnology in the Great Lakes through 1964: an annotated bibliography U.S. Federal research on fisheries and limnology in the Great Lakes through 1964: an annotated bibliography
The annotated bibliography is preceded by a brief account of the Federal research program in fisheries and limnology in the Great Lakes in 1957-64. The bibliography covers 314 papers by staff members of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries Biological Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Mich., and 35 by associated scientists with whom the Laboratory had contractual or other cooperative arrangements...

The distribution and abundance of planktonic diatoms in Lake Superior The distribution and abundance of planktonic diatoms in Lake Superior
The principal diatoms collected at 14 stations in Lake Superior were Cyclotella "glomerata-stelligera" [= C. glomerata and C. stelligera combined], Cyclotella "ocellata-kutzingiana", Fragilaria crotonensis, and Rhizosolenia eriensis. Concentrations were heaviest in the Apostle Islands region (up to 2,160 per ml) and lightest northwest of the Keweenaw Peninsula (68 to 78 per ml). Species

Experimental control of sea lampreys with electricity on the south shore of Lake Superior, 1953-60 Experimental control of sea lampreys with electricity on the south shore of Lake Superior, 1953-60
Experimental control of the sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, with electric barriers was begun in Lake Superior in 1953. Electrical devices were the most practical and promising method of control then available. Installed below spawning grounds in streams and rivers tributary to Lake Superior, these barriers were designed to prevent the sexually mature sea lampreys from reproducing. The...

Detection and measurement of organic lampricide residues Detection and measurement of organic lampricide residues
The selective lampricide, 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM), and its synergist, 5,2'-dichloro-4'-nitrosalicylanilide (DCN), are separable from natural waters by anion exchange. The adsorbed compounds can then be recovered from the resin as concentrates by elution with selective solvent mixtures. Measurements of the amounts of lampricides in the final concentrates can be made...

Movements of hatchery-reared lake trout in Lake Superior Movements of hatchery-reared lake trout in Lake Superior
The history of stocking of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in the Great Lakes is reviewed. The study of movements is based on capture of 24,275 fin-clipped lake trout taken in experimental gill nets and trawls and commercial gill nets. Yearling lake trout planted from shore dispersed to 15-fath (27-m) depths in 3A? hr. Most fish remained within 2 miles (3.2 km) of the planting site 2...

Automatic feeder for small fish held in tanks Automatic feeder for small fish held in tanks
The Northville (Michigan) Biological Station has been a center for study of the developmental morphology of coregonid fishes. This work requires the production of numerous individual series of lake herring, lake whitefish, and several species of chubs from parent fish of positively known identity. The offspring of individual pairs or groups of fish must be held in individual tanks from...

Distribution and abundance of the polychaete, Manayunkia speciosa Leidy, in western Lake Erie Distribution and abundance of the polychaete, Manayunkia speciosa Leidy, in western Lake Erie
The abundance and distribution of the freshwater polychaete, Manayunkia speciosa, in 1961, are described for western Lake Erie. Previous records reveal that the species has either been generally overlooked or presently its numbers have greatly increased in the area considered.

A recent occurrence of thermal stratification and low dissolved oxygen in western Lake Erie A recent occurrence of thermal stratification and low dissolved oxygen in western Lake Erie
Instances of thermal stratification have been detected only occasionally in western Lake Erie during the past 40 years, but when it does occur it is of considerable importance because of associated dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion in the hypolimnion. Data collected in June of 1963 give an indication of the meteorological conditions necessary to produce this thermal stratification. These...

Food of lake trout in Lake Superior Food of lake trout in Lake Superior
Stomachs were examined from 1,492 lake trout and 83 siscowets collected from Lake Superior. Data are given on the food of lake trout of legal size (17 inches or longer) by year, season, and depth of water, and on the relation between food and size among smaller lake trout. Fish contributed 96.7 to 99.9 per cent of the total volume of food in the annual samples. Ciscoes (Coregonus spp.)...

Sex ratios and sexual dimorphism among recently transformed sea lampreys, Petromyzon marinus Linnaeus Sex ratios and sexual dimorphism among recently transformed sea lampreys, Petromyzon marinus Linnaeus
The sex, length, and weight were determined of nearly all recently transformed sea lampreys migrating downstream in the Carp Lake River, Michigan, in the fall, winter, and spring of 1960-61. Similar data were collected from samples of an earlier run in the Carp Lake River and of runs in three other tributaries of Lakes Huron and Michigan. The sex ratio of the 1960-61 migrants in the Carp...

Distribution of fishes in U. S. streams tributary to Lake Superior Distribution of fishes in U. S. streams tributary to Lake Superior
Experimental sea lamprey control by the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries on Lake Superior streams provided many new distributional records of the fish fauna. Seventy-one species were recorded from 175 streams. Specimens were collected at the electromechanical barriers, with electric shockers, with fyke nets, and during chemical treatment of streams. Maps showing stream records of each...

Changes in the bottom fauna of western Lake Erie from 1930 to 1961 Changes in the bottom fauna of western Lake Erie from 1930 to 1961
Samples were collected at 40 stations in western Lake Erie in 1961 to determine the species composition, distribution, and abundance of macrobenthonic organisms and to document changes since 1930, when a similar survey was made. The fauna in 1961 was composed principally of Oligochaeta, Tendipedidae (7 genera), Sphaeriidac (15 species), and Gastropoda (at least 8 species). Stations with...
