Invasive Species Control

Non-native species become invasive when they cause excessive harm to native species or habitats, requiring active measures by environmental managers to stop or control them. The GLSC develops science-based management technologies and strategies to support these efforts. Occasionally, GLSC scientists conduct focused research to develop specific tools to detect, assess, manage, or eradicate an invasive species, such as with sea lamprey. In other cases, such as with invasive Phragmites reed grass, the GLSC works with managers to develop and implement an adaptive management process whereby ongoing monitoring and evaluation are incorporated directly into successive management decisions.
