The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has been tasked by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) with assessing the economic and technical viability of specific remediation enhancements at the Lipari Landfill Superfund Site (Lipari) located in Mantua Township, NJ. This work includes determining the source of current groundwater contamination in aquifers underlying the landfill and whether remediation is technically feasible.

STUDY OBJECTIVES:
Review selected Lipari landfill site data compiled by previous environmental contractors. Tie Lipari site data into the regional hydrostratigraphic framework of the New Jersey Coastal Plain including the unconfined Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system, the Vincentown aquifer, the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer and all intervening confining or semi-confining units including the basal Kirkwood, Manasquan, Hornerstown and Navesink Formations. Compile available water level data necessary for model calibration and accurate groundwater flow determination by researching databases and files of Federal, State and local sources such as USGS, USEPA, USACE, NJDEP, Gloucester County and surrounding Townships.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has been tasked by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) with assessing the economic and technical viability of specific remediation enhancements at the Lipari Landfill Superfund Site (Lipari) located in Mantua Township, NJ. The USEPA and USACE have agreed that a groundwater model is a necessary tool to complete these tasks. In order to develop a technically sound model, existing site conditions must be tied in with regional hydrologic data including the hydrogeologic framework, static and transient groundwater levels and groundwater withdrawals in the surficial and confined aquifers underlying the site. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) will provide technical support to the USACE through review and compilation of available data necessary for groundwater model development.
