Bird use of Winter-Flooded Rice Fields in the Sacramento Valley, California Bird use of Winter-Flooded Rice Fields in the Sacramento Valley, California
Bird and habitat surveys were conducted in winter-flooded rice fields in the Sacramento Valley, California, USA during the fall and winters of 2021-2022 (Oct 2021 through February 2022) and 2022-2023 (December 2022 through February 2023). Rice field sampling consisted of (1) a bird survey that was followed by (2) an overall habitat assessment and (3) a more detailed habitat transect...
Saline Lake Ecosystems IWAA Lakes Saline Lake Ecosystems IWAA Lakes
The 2022 Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill - the appropriations bill that funds the USGS - established a regional Integrated Water Availability Assessment study program in the Great Basin of the American West. Twenty saline lakes across California, Nevada, Oregon, and Utah were identified by USGS partners as priority ecosystems. They...

Body Mass of Dabbling and Diving Ducks Harvested in California Body Mass of Dabbling and Diving Ducks Harvested in California
Body mass data (measured in grams) of dabbling and diving ducks harvested in three regions of California: Sacramento Valley, Suisun Marsh, and San Joaquin Valley during the 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2018/2019, and 2019/2020 hunting seasons. In addition to mass, the flattened length of right wing, species, sex, age, and date of harvest were also recorded. These data support the...
Forest Conditions Following the 2018 Carr Fire at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Forest Conditions Following the 2018 Carr Fire at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area
This data release provides forest structure information including basal area and stem density by genus and mortality status for overstory and sapling trees in 149 plots in Whiskeytown National Recreation area in California, USA. The data includes forest structure measurements taken before and after the 2018 Carr Fire, a nearly 93,000 hectare wildfire.
UAS Whiskeytown UAS Whiskeytown
Raw aerial photography, orthorectified imagery, point cloud data, and digital elevation models (DEMs) for Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (NRA) following the Carr Fire. Sites within the NRA include: Lower Crystal Creek, Tower House, Grizzly Gulch, Boulder Creek South Shore and Conifer, Brandy Creek Camp, Shasta Divide, Paige Bar (North, NEED Camp, East, and Southeast), Chinese...
Soil Characteristics and Accretion Rates in Mangrove Forests across Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia Soil Characteristics and Accretion Rates in Mangrove Forests across Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia
Soil cores were collected in mangrove forests across Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia to understand spatial variation in accretion rates. Cores were dated using lead-210 and processed for bulk density and organic matter percent through loss-on-ignition analysis. A total of 30 cores were successfully dated across seven regions around the island.
Tree Growth at Redwood National Park from 1970 to 2015 Tree Growth at Redwood National Park from 1970 to 2015
This dataset describes tree growth and site characteristics for 26 monitoring plots in 3 sites in Redwood National Park in California, USA. One site (A972) was established and sampled in 2007, 2008, and 2013 (Dagley and others, 2023). Two sites (Holter Ridge and Whiskey 40) were established and sampled in 2009 (van Mantgem and Das, 2014). Six existing plots in the Holter Ridge and...
Greater Sage-Grouse Abundance in Sagebrush Focal Areas near Critical Mineral Resources (ver. 2.0, September 2024) Greater Sage-Grouse Abundance in Sagebrush Focal Areas near Critical Mineral Resources (ver. 2.0, September 2024)
We quantified the relative abundance of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) populations within Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Sagebrush Focal Areas (SFAs).
Rasters and Tables for Selection and Survival of Greater Sage-grouse Nests and Broods in the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment of California and Nevada Rasters and Tables for Selection and Survival of Greater Sage-grouse Nests and Broods in the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment of California and Nevada
We demonstrate a quantitative approach to differentiate source and sink habitats at large spatial scales using the greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter, sage-grouse), an indicator species for sagebrush ecosystems, as a case-study. We evaluated both selection and survival across multiple reproductive life stages (nesting, brood-rearing) in the Bi-State Distinct...
Greater Sage-Grouse Habitat Selection, Survival, Abundance, and Space-Use in the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment of California and Nevada Greater Sage-Grouse Habitat Selection, Survival, Abundance, and Space-Use in the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment of California and Nevada
Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereinafter sage-grouse) is a sagebrush obligate species and widely considered an indicator species for sagebrush ecosystems and other sagebrush-dependent species (Hanser and Knick, 2011; Prochazka and others, 2023). Sagebrush ecosystems are threatened by a wide range of disturbances and anthropogenic factors, including climate change...
Timing of Occurrence of Waterfowl in U.S. Counties and Canadian Counties, Boroughs, Census Districts, and Other Populated Area Designations with Modeled Exposure Status to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus in 2021-2022 Timing of Occurrence of Waterfowl in U.S. Counties and Canadian Counties, Boroughs, Census Districts, and Other Populated Area Designations with Modeled Exposure Status to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus in 2021-2022
This data provides county level occurrence information for all individuals used in modelling potential exposure and spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAIv) from the 2021-2022 North American outbreak. The data set contains individual identifiers and taxa information, an indicator of exposure, exposure status (Susceptible, Exposed by HPAIv detection in the county, or Exposed by...
Occupancy Surveys for the Temblor Legless Lizard (Anniella alexanderae) in the San Joaquin Valley, California 2022 to 2023 Occupancy Surveys for the Temblor Legless Lizard (Anniella alexanderae) in the San Joaquin Valley, California 2022 to 2023
This dataset contains the survey effort by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) biologists sampling for Temblor legless lizards (Anniella alexanderae) in 2022 and 2023, the results of those surveys, and environmental covariates relevant to detection and occupancy of this species. At the time of the species description, little was known about the distribution of the Temblor legless lizard beyond...
