Scavenging rates of invertebrates in an eastern deciduous forest Scavenging rates of invertebrates in an eastern deciduous forest
Rates at which scavengers located three types of dead insects were measured. All dead insects were taken by ants with a median time of 3.75 min (range 0.33-36 min). This gives strong indirect evidence that such food is in short supply.

Post-fire succession of the herbaceous flora in southern California chaparral Post-fire succession of the herbaceous flora in southern California chaparral
Postfire succesion of the temporary herbaceous and suffrutescent cover was studied after chaparral fires in San Diego County, California, USA. Four categories of species make up the temporary cover. (1) "Generalized herbaceous perennials" are present before and after fire. Populations of these herbs are sparse under the shrub canopy. They resprout after fire from bulbs or other...

Seawater consumption and water flux in the common dolphin Delphinus delphis Seawater consumption and water flux in the common dolphin Delphinus delphis
Two captive female common dolphins (59 kg and 55 kg) were given intravenous injections of tritiated water (HTO) and sodium-22 (Na-22) after the first day of a 5-day fast. Blood samples were collected each of the next 4 days. Total body water was 37% of total body weight, and the mean rate of water turnover was 77 ml∙kg⁻¹day⁻¹. This low value for total body water of a mammal is due to the...

Dark CO2-fixation and diurnal malic acid fluctuations in the submerged-aquatic Isoetes storkii Dark CO2-fixation and diurnal malic acid fluctuations in the submerged-aquatic Isoetes storkii
In the leaves (but not corms) of the submerged aquatic Isoetes storkii malic acid concentration fluctuated from 22 μeg g FW-1 in the evening to 171 μeg g FW-1 in the morning. Associated with this was a change in titratable acidity of 152 μeg g FW-1 between morning and evening. 14C carbon was fixed in both the light and the dark, though the amount of carbon fixed in the light was more...

The effect of use limits on backcountry visitation trends in Yosemite National Park The effect of use limits on backcountry visitation trends in Yosemite National Park
Backcountry use in Yosemite National Park increased drastically during the decade starting in the mid 1960s. In 1975, use reached a maximum of nearly 79,000 visitors and 219,000 visitor nights. Since then use has leveled off to about 89 percent of the peak figures for visitors and 84 percent for visitor nights. This leveling off is attributed primarily to a general trend of decreased...
