Atypical interactions between male southern sea otters and pinnipeds Atypical interactions between male southern sea otters and pinnipeds
Here we describe unusual interspecific interactions between two male southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris neries) and pinnipeds. These two sea otters were among 30 male and 110 female otters translocated from central California to San Nicolas Island (SNI, 33”15’N, 119”3O’W), one of the California Channel Islands. Each otter was uniquely marked with two plastic colored tags before release...

The marine snail, Cerithidea californica, matures at smaller sizes where parasitism is high The marine snail, Cerithidea californica, matures at smaller sizes where parasitism is high
I investigated life-history and parasitism in the salt marsh snail, Cerithidea californica. Latitude and growing conditions were important factors determining maturation size. After accounting for environmental variation, there was a negative association between the maturation size of snails and the prevalence of parasitic castration by larval trematodes. As predicted by life-history...

Reproductive characteristics of female sea otters Reproductive characteristics of female sea otters
Several important aspects of reproduction in the female sea otter, such as gestation, pupping frequency, period of pup dependency, and annual pupping rate, were unclear when this study was begun. We present data from 75 tagged adult females that indicate gestation is variable, but on average is about 6 months, the length of pup dependency is 6 mo, thus the pupping interval is usually 12...
