Differential predation by northern squawfish Ptychocheilus oregonensis on live and dead juvenile salmonids in the Bonneville Dam tailrace (Columbia River) Differential predation by northern squawfish Ptychocheilus oregonensis on live and dead juvenile salmonids in the Bonneville Dam tailrace (Columbia River)
Juvenile salmonids (Oncorhynchus spp.) that have been killed or injured during dam passage may be highly vulnerable or preferred prey of predators that aggregate below dams. Salmonid loss due to predation will be overestimated using gut content analysis if some prey were dead or moribund when consumed. To examine this issue, field experiments were conducted in the Bonneville Dam tailrace...

White sturgeon spawning and rearing habitat in the lower Columbia River White sturgeon spawning and rearing habitat in the lower Columbia River
Estimates of spawning habitat for white sturgeons Acipenser transmontanus in the tailraces of the four dams on the lower 470 km of the Columbia River were obtained by using the Physical Habitat Simulation System of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Instream Flow Incremental Methodology to identify areas with suitable water depths, water velocities, and substrates. Rearing habitat...

Developmental instability as an indicator of natural stress on the Pacific Hake (Merlussius productus) Developmental instability as an indicator of natural stress on the Pacific Hake (Merlussius productus)
Developmental lnstability (DI) has been proposed as an inexpensive, quickly applied, and sensitive indicator of stress that can be utilized in early warning and in monitoring anthropogenic impacts on fish and other animals and plants. A problem arises, however, to the extent that natural stressors confound the effects of human-induced disturbances. Our objective in this work was to...

Molecular genotyping of Colletotrichum species based on arbitrarily primed PCR, A + T-Rich DNA, and nuclear DNA analyses Molecular genotyping of Colletotrichum species based on arbitrarily primed PCR, A + T-Rich DNA, and nuclear DNA analyses
Molecular genotyping of Colletotrichum species based on arbitrarily primed PCR, A + T-rich DNA, and nuclear DNA analyses. Experimental Mycology 17, 309-322. Isolates of Colletotrichum were grouped into 10 separate species based on arbitrarily primed PCR (ap-PCR), A + T-rich DNA (AT-DNA) and nuclear DNA banding patterns. In general, the grouping of Colletotrichum isolates by these...

Effect of four fluctuating temperature regimes on cui-ui Chasmistes cujus survival from egg fertilization to swim-up and size of larvae produced Effect of four fluctuating temperature regimes on cui-ui Chasmistes cujus survival from egg fertilization to swim-up and size of larvae produced
We evaluated cui-ui,Chasmistes cujus, swim-up success, time of hatching and swim-up, and size of larvae at swim-up under four fluctuating temperature regimes (8.9–15.0, 12.2–18.3, 15.0–21.1, and 17.8–23.9° C). The greatest swim-up success was at the 8.9–15.0° C regime and the lowest at the 15.0–21.1° C regime. Hatching and swim-up time varied inversely with incubation temperature. The...
