This graphic shows the cumulative number of scenes by path and row in the Landsat archive from 1972 - 2020.

The world’s longest continuously collected Earth observation archive added its nine millionth scene this week. Landsat 8, launched in 2013, acquired the scene on Saturday, September 19, 2020 over northern Paraguay.

The image was added to the Landsat Archive at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center roughly two years after the acquisition of the eight millionth scene and six months after the program marked its 100 millionth download.

The USGS Landsat Archive is an Earth surface record of unparalleled temporal depth, stretching back nearly 50 years. Landsat 9’s planned launch in 2021 will serve to maintain continuity for this critical stream of freely-available Earth surface data, which has enabled countless research endeavors and scientific applications since the launch of the first Landsat in 1972.
