Input data for the mining water-use model for the United States, 2019-2020

August 19, 2026

This data release contains a processed dataset used as input to a machine learning model that estimates monthly water use for mining by 12-digit hydrologic unit codes (HUC12) across the United States, excluding territories, provided as a comma separated values (CSV) file (Mining_model_input_data.csv). The dataset is primarily comprised of mine attributes and associated water use data. The water use data were linked to the mines using an iterative, fuzzy matching process to identify most likely matches as there was no common identifier or link between the mine and water use information. Demographic and national energy production data are also included as attributes in the dataset. In addition to the processed dataset, a list of water use data sources (MiningModel_Input_DataSources.txt) and a set of Jupyter Notebooks used to create and process the data are provided.
