USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center BSL-3 Laboratory
Detailed Description
The BSL-3 complex at the USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center was purpose-built to serve our Nation’s needs. This facility has special engineering and design features for maintaining a safe environment when working with diseases that spread in the air. The facility is unusual in that it is designed to also be used for work with aquatic animals that requires a high degree of biological containment. Whether it be working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to detect SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater or testing fish viruses to better understand how to protect our native species, this facility and the people who work in it can provide essential services in a way that is safe for people and the surrounding environment.
