July 18, 2016 – Webpage, factsheets highlight 50 years of “Project EROS”

In 1966, Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall announced his vision to create “a program aimed at gathering facts about the natural resources of the earth from earth-orbiting satellites.”

The announcement created “Project EROS”.

Leading up to the golden jubilee on September 21, 2016, USGS EROS webpage contains not only historical artifacts about this important milestone, but also links to a number of new factsheets being created to demonstrate the benefits of Landsat – on topics such as water use, forest health, urban growth and food security.  Udall’s vision gave the world the confidence to create satellite systems to help people understand the intricate nature of our planet with a new perspective.
