Dec 22, 2019 – Landsat 8 Safe Mode Latest Update

On December 19, 2019 at approximately 12:23 UTC, Landsat 8 experienced a spacecraft constraint which triggered entry into its Safe Mode. The spacecraft has resumed nominal on-orbit operations and ground station processing. Real-Time data products from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) are available for download but remain provisional.

In approximately one week, all acquisitions from the point of resuming nominal operations after the spacecraft entered into Safe Mode will be reprocessed with all necessary and typical calibration updates. Users who download provisional Real-Time data products during this time should monitor subsequent updates from the USGS Landsat program, as these provisional products will be reprocessed once calibration and validation engineering and assessment have been completed.

Another status will be provided once the OLI/TIRS provisional data reprocessing timeline has been determined.
