March 2023 - Vol. 2 | Issue 3
Landsat 8 celebrated its tenth anniversary on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Landsat 9 Collection 2 Level-3 Science Products are now available. Current Landsat Science Team reflects at their final meeting. Read the latest updates about the Landsat program here.
Upcoming Reprocessing of all Landsat 9 Data
Landsat 9 Collection 2 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) data from the first year of operations will be reprocessed starting Wednesday, March 1, 2023. This reprocessing effort will take advantage of calibration updates identified by the USGS/NASA Calibration and Validation team. Reprocessing is expected to take approximately 6-8 weeks.
Current Landsat Science Team Reflects at Final Meeting
The Winter 2023 USGS-NASA Landsat Science Team (LST) meeting was held February 7-9, 2023, at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada. This meeting concludes the five-year term of the current team.
Landsat 9 Collection 2 Level-3 Products Now Available
The production of Landsat 9 Level-3 Dynamic Surface Water Extent (DSWE) and Fractional Snow Cover Area (fSCA) science products has begun in coordination with the Collection 2 Landsat 9 data reprocessing campaign.
Celebrating a Decade of Landsat 8
The technology of the satellite and its instruments, revolutionary in 2013, continues to provide important and timely data for scientific observation of the Earth’s land surfaces. Landsat 8 continues to image the Earth with Landsat 9 and Landsat 7.
Eyes on Earth Episode 90 – Landsat 8 Turns 10
Eyes on Earth is a podcast on remote sensing, Earth observation, land change and science, brought to you by the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. In this episode, we reflect on Landsat 8’s 10th anniversary and the satellite’s contribution of 2.5 million scenes to the 50-year Landsat archive.
Processing Plans Established for Data Affected by Landsat 8 Safehold
Since recovering from the January 26, 2023 safehold that paused Landsat 8 data acquisitions, the USGS/NASA Calibration/Validation Team (CVT) have inspected the data acquired just prior, and shortly after the event, to determine if the data are of nominal Landsat geometric and/or radiometric quality.
Requesting Nominations for 2023 Pecora Award
Nominations have opened for the 2023 William T. Pecora Award, the 50th annual presentation, sponsored by the Department of the Interior and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Landsat 9 Data Processing Resumes after TIRS Anomaly
The USGS/NASA Calibration/Validation Team has completed their analysis and found that the radiometry and geometry of the Landsat 9 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) data acquired after the February 27, 2023 anomaly are of good quality and that a new Calibration Parameter File (CPF) does not need to be issued. This concurrence allows for the processing of Landsat 9 products to resume.
Landsat Collection 2 Provisional Aquatic Reflectance Science Product
Landsat Collection 2 Provisional Aquatic Reflectance is a provisional science product with the potential to make a valuable contribution to aquatic science and environmental monitoring capabilities for aquatic ecosystems, especially in coastal environments and inland waters.
Eyes on Earth Episode 89 – EROS Workers and Weather
Eyes on Earth is a podcast on remote sensing, Earth observation, land change and science, brought to you by the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. In this episode, we take a look at how essential employees ensure that the ground station keeps receiving satellite imagery during wintry weather.
