More than 5,000 acres of wetlands have been lost within the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Maryland since the late 1930s. The loss of coastal wetland over time is captured in this progression of satellite images spanning 1938 to 2018. Light colors indicate vegetated areas, and dark colors indicate open water.
