Detailed Description

Juvenile Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) exhibiting abnormal behaviors associated with exposure to 6PPD-quinone, a derivative of the compound 6PPD which is used in tires to prevent wear. The loss of equilibrium, inability of stay parallel to the surface, and the loss of buoyancy displayed by these fish are termed “urban runoff mortality syndrome” and are the characteristic suite of symptoms associated with 6PPD-quinone exposure in fish. This work falls under this IACUC permit 2008-72 and was performed by USGS scientists following approved handling procedures.
