Join us July 25-29, 2016, for a 5-day educator workshop at Mount Rainier. The workshop features informative talks on Cascade volcanoes and volcanic processes, ideas for classroom activities, hikes into the field, and tips for organizing school field trips to visit the volcano. There is no charge for this workshop and camping is available to participants.

Mount Rainier 2018 Teacher Workshop

The USGS-Cascades Volcano Observatory opens its doors to the public on Saturday, May 12, for a one-day open house. Scientists will be on-hand from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm to share the results of their research and talk about volcano hazards. Hands-on activities and equipment demonstrations will be featured.

Oceanic crust forms by eruptions along the Juan de Fuca ridge. As the Juan de Fuca plate drifts eastward, it cools, becomes more dense, and eventually dives under the less dense continental plate at the Cascadia trench.

The station is a lahar monitoring station with a broadband seismometer and video camera. Data from the station use radio telemetry to send real time information to the Instituto Geofisico of Ecuador.
