Brave Wilderness (YouTube) featured our Hammond Bay Biological Station's research on Sea Lamprey control in the Great Lakes during two episodes released in November 2020.
The two sea lamprey episodes filmed by the Brave Wilderness YouTube channel with assistance from GLSC/Great Lakes Fishery Commission communications associate, Dr. Andrea Miehls (GLSC, Millersburg, Michigan), were released on Wednesday, November 25 (Episode 1) and Friday, November 27, 2020 (Episode 2). The episodes feature an “experiment” by Brave Wilderness host, Coyote Peterson, determining whether sea lamprey will attack people. In only one week the episodes combined have garnered nearly five million views! The GLSC’s Hammond Bay Biological Station is mentioned during the first episode and is described as being “on the forefront of Great Lakes research.” The videography was coordinated by the Fishery Commission, and much of the scientific information conveyed in the episodes was drawn from discussions with Miehls and Fishery Commission colleagues. The episodes are bringing widespread attention to research and control of sea lamprey in the Great Lakes.
