Pearl Harbor National Memorial, O‘ahu Hawaiian Hoary bat acoustic activity and tree metric data, 2024 Pearl Harbor National Memorial, O‘ahu Hawaiian Hoary bat acoustic activity and tree metric data, 2024
We examined acoustic activity of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat ('ōpe'ape'a; Lasiurus semotus), as well as surveyed potential roost trees at Pearl Harbor National Memorial (PERL) located on Ford Island, O‘ahu, Hawaii. The study area was located at the Ford Island Chief Petty Officer's (CPO) Bungalows Neighborhood, which covers approximately 4 acres and includes five historic CPO...
Saipan, data collected from visual surveys during a mock rapid response exercise, October 2023 Saipan, data collected from visual surveys during a mock rapid response exercise, October 2023
These data were created in October 2023 while completing nocturnal visual surveys for brown treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) as part of an early detection and rapid response training exercise. They contain data on counts of lizards, small mammals, and birds documented while completing surveys. There are no brown treesnake counts because no snakes were detected during the exercise.
Island of Hawai‘i, assessment of standing and felled ‘ōhi‘a trees infected with Ceratocystis wilt of ‘ōhi‘a, 2014 - 2021 Island of Hawai‘i, assessment of standing and felled ‘ōhi‘a trees infected with Ceratocystis wilt of ‘ōhi‘a, 2014 - 2021
Ceratocystis lukuohia is one of two fungal pathogens that causes Rapid ‘Ōhi‘a Death (ROD) in Hawaii. This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents the persistence of C. lukuohia in ‘ōhi‘a trees (Metrosideros polymorpha) that have died from the disease. Additionally, the data release documents the presence of active ambrosia beetle (Curculionidae, Xyleborini)...
Guam, USGS Closed Population data associated with lizard monitoring and reintroductions in and around USGS Closed Population, 2016 - 2022 Guam, USGS Closed Population data associated with lizard monitoring and reintroductions in and around USGS Closed Population, 2016 - 2022
We experimentally controlled brown treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) in a 5 ha study site on Guam and monitored extant lizards for a response to snake suppression. We then used functional response in extant lizards to snake suppression as a trigger to initiate reintroductions of three extirpated lizard species, with different activity patterns or microhabitat uses. These represent data from
Island of Hawai‘i, arthropod response to forest restoration, 2019 - 2023 Island of Hawai‘i, arthropod response to forest restoration, 2019 - 2023
This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents counts of arthropods collected from forest litter at the Liko Nā Pilina study site located on the Keaukaha Military Reservation, Hilo, Hawai‘i. These data are represented in three files: 1) a description of the date and location for each sample, 2) classification for all taxa, and 3) counts of each taxon in each sample...
Island of Hawai'i, Host preferences of Acalolepta aesthetica 2020-2023 Island of Hawai'i, Host preferences of Acalolepta aesthetica 2020-2023
Acalolepta aesthetica (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a beetle species whose larvae develop within branches and stems of host plants and can harm or kill host trees. Since this species was detected on the Island of Hawai'i in 2009, it has been documented to have a wide host breadth but its host preferences and its potential to use native plant species as hosts have not been formally...
Island of Hawaii ROD tree inoculation study, 2019-2022 Island of Hawaii ROD tree inoculation study, 2019-2022
This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents the response of ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) and ambrosia beetles (Curculionidae, Xyleborini) following the intentional inoculation of healthy ohia to Ceratocystis lukuohia, one of two fungal pathogens that causes Rapid Ohia Death (ROD). Ohia were inoculated with the ROD pathogen at three sites differing in elevation...
Guam, reproductive condition of Brown Treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) in different habitats 2010-2012 Guam, reproductive condition of Brown Treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) in different habitats 2010-2012
This data release included data and metadata documenting morphological measurements and sex of Brown Treesnakes (Boiga irregularis; BTS) in 18 sites spanning six habitat types in Guam collected between 2010 and 2012 including measurements of relevant reproductive structures.
Mauna Kea Palila Egg Harvest 1996 Mauna Kea Palila Egg Harvest 1996
This data release includes data and metadata documenting the removal of eggs from wild palila (Loxioides bailleui) nests to stimulate wild renesting while hatching the harvested eggs and rearing the chicks in captivity for later release to the wild. Some eggs were not harvested and were monitored in the wild for hatching and resulting progeny. The data provides details related to the...
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park Effects of Felling and Tarping Trees on ROD Viability and Ambrosia Beetle Activity 2022-2023 Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park Effects of Felling and Tarping Trees on ROD Viability and Ambrosia Beetle Activity 2022-2023
Felling and tarping is a common management strategy for ʻōhiʻa lehua trees (Metrosideros polymorpha) infected with rapid ʻōhiʻa death (ROD) caused by Ceratocystis lukuohia and Ceratocystis huliohia fungal pathogens and spread via ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). In order to understand how tarping may decrease fungal viability or the spread of viable beetle frass, this study...
Island of Hawai'i Ambrosia Beetle Trapping Data and Locations of Suspected Ceratocystis-positive ʻōhiʻa at Two Sites, 2021-2022 Island of Hawai'i Ambrosia Beetle Trapping Data and Locations of Suspected Ceratocystis-positive ʻōhiʻa at Two Sites, 2021-2022
This data release includes data and metadata documenting 1) ambrosia beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) species caught in multi-panel traps within ʻōhiʻa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) dominated forests in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park as well as results from culturing Ceratocystis lukuohia or Ceratocystis huliohia, the fungi that cause rapid ʻōhiʻa death (ROD), from these traps, 2)...
Hawaiʻi verbenone repellents for ambrosia beetles on healthy and diseased ʻōhiʻa 2022-2023 Hawaiʻi verbenone repellents for ambrosia beetles on healthy and diseased ʻōhiʻa 2022-2023
In this experiment at Waiākea Forest Reserve, we tested the efficacy of the semiochemical repellent, verbenone, in commercial SPLAT® Verb formulation, at protecting healthy and rapid ʻōhiʻa death-Ceratocystis infested ʻōhiʻa from ambrosia beetle colonization in the 2022 and 2023 field seasons. Data files include 1) raw beetle counts, 2) individual tree information, and 3) verbenone mean...
