Machine learning with satellite imagery to document the historical transition from topographic to dense sub-surface agricultural drainage networks (tile drains) Machine learning with satellite imagery to document the historical transition from topographic to dense sub-surface agricultural drainage networks (tile drains)
Image library of (1) tile-drained landscapes and (2) tile-drain types that will be used for a machine-learning model workflow that identifies (1) tile-drained landscapes and (2) differentiates two types of tile-drained areas visible in satellite imagery. These images were sourced from WorldView and Quickbird satellite imagery (copyright DigitalGlobe) and cropped to features of interest...
Machine-learning model predictions and rasters of groundwater salinity in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain Machine-learning model predictions and rasters of groundwater salinity in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain
Groundwater from the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA), coincident with the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP), is a vital resource for agriculture and drinking-water supplies in the central United States. Water availability can be limited in some areas of the aquifer by high concentrations of salinity, measured as specific conductance. Boosted regression trees (BRT), a type...
Macroinvertebrate communities in Shenandoah Valley streams, 2021 Macroinvertebrate communities in Shenandoah Valley streams, 2021
From 20 May - 8 June 2021, a Virginia Tech team of 2-3 sampled the macroinvertebrate community in 30 Shenandoah Valley streams (Virginia and West Virginia, USA) as part of a larger stream-health study including other teams who surveyed geomorphology, water quality, flow, temperature, fish community, and fish health at the same 30 streams. The macroinvertebrate community team also...
Macroinvertebrates from Streams and Springs in the 1002 Region of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, 2021 Macroinvertebrates from Streams and Springs in the 1002 Region of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, 2021
This dataset includes tables related to macroinvertebrate collections in streams and springs of the 1002 region of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Alaska. Macroinvertebrates were collected using kicknets and driftnets in April and August with the goal of comparing populations to those sampled from the same water bodies by the USGS in the 1970s.
Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the Wet Mountains, Colorado, 2021 to 2022 Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the Wet Mountains, Colorado, 2021 to 2022
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected rock magnetic susceptibility measurements to understand the causative sources of airborne magnetic survey anomalies in the Wet Mountains, Colorado. A total of 808 measurements were collected over 50 locations from August 2021 to June 2022 on rocks ranging from Paleoproterozoic to Oligocene age. These measurements aid the interpretation of newly...
Magnetotelluric sounding data across the Idaho Batholith, Payette National Forest, Idaho, 1989 Magnetotelluric sounding data across the Idaho Batholith, Payette National Forest, Idaho, 1989
This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 1989 across the Idaho Batholith, Payette National Forest, Idaho, by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The primary focus is on geologic elements that relate to the Late Cretaceous Idaho batholith geometry and the development of the Yellow Pine mining district and Stibnite mining area. Twenty MT soundings along one...
Magnitude and Frequency of Floods for Rural Streams in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, 2017-Data Magnitude and Frequency of Floods for Rural Streams in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, 2017-Data
Reliable estimates of the magnitude and frequency of floods are an important part of the framework for hydraulic-structure design and flood-plain management. Annual peak flows measured at U.S. Geological Survey streamgages are used to compute flood-frequency estimates at those streamgages. However, flood-frequency estimates also are needed at ungaged stream locations. A process known as
Maine StreamStats Foundation Data Layers Maine StreamStats Foundation Data Layers
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with Maine Department of Transportation, has compiled a series of GIS datasets to be implemented into the USGS StreamStats application for the State of Maine. These data were compiled from the high-resolution National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) and the Maine Lidar-Derived Watersheds (Sturtevant and Schoen, 2022). By using these datasets...
Mainstem Rivers of the Conterminous United States (ver. 2.0, February 2023) Mainstem Rivers of the Conterminous United States (ver. 2.0, February 2023)
Note: this data release has been superseded by version 3.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P13LNDDQ. Mainstem rivers are the backbone of a connected network of hydrologic units that cover the landscape. A mainstem connects a headwater source area to an outlet. This data release identifies the same mainstem paths in hydrographic datasets for the conterminous US. The Mainstems...
Major and trace element geochemistry and mineralogy of ferromanganese crusts from seamounts within the Tuvalu Exclusive Economic Zone Major and trace element geochemistry and mineralogy of ferromanganese crusts from seamounts within the Tuvalu Exclusive Economic Zone
Ferromanganese crusts were collected via dredge from seamounts within the Tuvalu Exclusive Economic Zone in the Pacific Ocean during cruise RR1310 funded by the National Science Foundation aboard the R/V Roger Revelle in 2013. USGS scientists requested these ferromanganese crust samples from the Oregon State University Marine and Geology Repository where they had been archived...
Major- and trace-element chemical analyses of whole-rock and glass from the Kamakaiʻa Hills of the Southwest Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaiʻi Major- and trace-element chemical analyses of whole-rock and glass from the Kamakaiʻa Hills of the Southwest Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaiʻi
This dataset includes wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) major-oxide and trace-element whole-rock analyses, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) trace-element whole-rock analyses, and glass analyses by electron microprobe of scoria and lava samples from the Kamakaiʻa Hills of the Southwest Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano, Island of Hawaiʻi...
Mallard migration and regional movement timing, distance, and direction data, 2018–2020 Mallard migration and regional movement timing, distance, and direction data, 2018–2020
The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is an abundant and wide-spread duck species that exhibits considerable variation in migratory behavior due to a relatively large body size and behavioral plasticity in habitat use. Understanding migration and other movements of mallards has societal interest in a wildlife management context because mallards are a preferred species of waterfowl by hunters...
