Approaches, field considerations and problems associated with radio tracking carnivores Approaches, field considerations and problems associated with radio tracking carnivores

The adaptation of radio tracking to ecological studies was a major technological advance affecting field investigations of animal movements and behavior. Carnivores have been the recipients of much attention with this new technology and study approaches have varied from simple to complex. Equipment performance has much improved over the years, but users still face many difficulties. The...

Artificial insemination of cranes with frozen semen Artificial insemination of cranes with frozen semen

For the first time (1978) artificial insemination (AI) with frozen greater sandhill crane (Grus canadensis tabida) semen resulted in fertile eggs and chicks. During the 2 year (1977-78) study, 6 of 27 eggs produced were fertile. Three chicks hatched. Semen samples used for insemination were frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen for two months or less. Recent improvements in the laboratory...

Bird communities associated with succession and management of lowland conifer forests Bird communities associated with succession and management of lowland conifer forests

Data from published bird censuses were used to determine changes in avian communities in relation to plant succession, fire, type conversion, and timber management practices in lowland conifer forests in the northeastern United States. With modifications in current logging practices, habitat for the bird species that nest in undisturbed stands can be provided. Management guidelines are

Brain cholinesterase activities of passerine birds in forests sprayed with cholinesterase inhibiting insecticides Brain cholinesterase activities of passerine birds in forests sprayed with cholinesterase inhibiting insecticides

Brain cholinesterase activities were determined in passerines collected from northwestern forests that had been sprayed with trichlorfon, acephate, and carbaryl at 0.56, 1.13 and 2.26 kg/ha. Trichlorfon and carbaryl inhibited cholinesterase activity slightly in only a few birds, primarily canopy dwellers. In contrast, acephate caused marked inhibition of cholinesterase activity in nearly...
