From volcanologists to oceanographers, biologists to paleontologists, the U.S. Geological Survey employs thousands of scientists across the Earth sciences. Each has a unique role in supporting the bureau’s mission of providing “science for a changing word." Here are the stories of the USGS scientists working to address a defining challenge of our time: climate change.

Stories of Science 

What does a “climate scientist” look like? What does a climate scientist do? 

At the USGS, it may be writing computer code in a North Carolina office, or scuba diving off a Hawaiian reef. It may be fitting a tracking collar onto Arctic caribou, or analyzing biogeochemical samples of water from the San Francisco Bay. 

Our climate work stretches across the continent, spanning disciplines and programs. Our climate scientists come from different backgrounds and live in different places. But they all work towards the same goal: to help the Nation understand the effects of climate change and take actionable steps towards protecting and restoring America’s resources.  

These are their stories.
