Technical Assistance

Technical assistance from Unit scientists provides cost effective solutions ensuring taxpayer dollars go further. We provided over 140 technical assistance actions in FY 24 that included technical advice, analyses, and other products, such as assisting partners with field and laboratory data collection and analysis, digital app development, and training agency personnel on fish aging.

This list does not encompass all technical assistance projects. This page is under construction.

  • The Oregon Unit presented a keynote address to the Oregon Lakes Association annual meeting on reservoir ecology.
  • The Massachusetts Unit led two regional working groups on Atlantic Coast freshwater mussel species—brook floater (Alasmidonta varicosa) and yellow lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa). The working groups are made up of Unit scientists and State, Provincial, and Federal biologists and managers in order to foster information-sharing and collaboration for coordinated conservation of these imperiled species.
  • Working with partners from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Michigan Unit used camera traps at Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge to estimate the density of Northern raccoons, an important nest predator.
  • The Minnesota Unit Lynn served on an expert technical review panel for Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch for assessment of California yellowtail (Seriola dorsalis) white seabass (Atractoscion nobilis), and giant sea bass (Stereolepis gigas). This assessment informs the Seafood Watch seafood recommendations (formerly the “Pocket Guides”).
  • The New York Unit is assisting cooperators with decision-making support for fisher harvest management and a deer-management assistance program.
  • The South Dakota Unit Joshua Stafford works with state agency personnel regarding issues of waterfowl management in the State and Central Flyway, and on various issues of waterfowl management and regulations.
  • The Wisconsin-Fishery Unit was asked by the Wisconsin DNR to serve as a member of a forum designed to outline future management directions for walleye (Sander vitreus) in northern Wisconsin.
