Focusing on a landscape-level understanding of terrestrial, aquatic & marine species & ecosystems, through data integration and visualization.
SAS biodiversity science activities focus on the landscape-level understanding of terrestrial, aquatic, and marine species and ecosystems, through development, maintenance, and integration of a suite of synthesized data systems used to conduct biodiversity assessments at regional to national scales.

Ocean Biogeographic Information System USA (OBIS-USA)
OBIS-USA is the US Node of the Ocean Biogeographic Information System, providing the collection and distribution point to OBIS of marine biogeographic records in U.S. waters or collected with U.S. funding. Using the Darwin Core standard, OBIS-USA integrates and makes accessible data on marine species presence, absence, and abundance to aid scientists, resource managers, and decisions makers.
Gap Analysis Project (GAP)
GAP provides data to assess effects of land management by providing information on where species and natural communities occur and how they are being managed. "Gap analysis" assesses how well we are protecting common plants and animals by identifying the degree to which animal species and plant communities are under-represented on protected lands such as parks and refuges.
Species of Greatest Conservation Need National Database 2005-2022
The Species of Greatest Conservation Need National Database is an aggregation of lists from State Wildlife Action Plans. Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) are wildlife species that need conservation attention as listed in action plans. In this database, we have validated scientific names from original documents against taxonomic authorities to increase consistency among names...
U.S. Register of Introduced and Invasive Species StoryMap
Comprehensive and Authoritative Lists of Non-Native Taxa Established in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Conterminous United States.
PAD-US Data Explorer
Administered by the U.S. Geological Survey Gap Analysis Project, the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is the nation’s official inventory of public open space and private protected areas. The lands included in PAD-US are assigned conservation status codes that both denote the level of biodiversity preservation and indicate other natural, recreational and cultural uses.
PAD-US Statistics Dashboard
Administered by the U.S. Geological Survey Gap Analysis Project, the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is the nation’s official inventory of public open space and private protected areas. GBIF-US
Species observations for the United States and Territories.
Download Species Range and Predicted Habitat Data
This tool allows the user to explore or download the National Gap terrestrial species habitat distribution models, ranges and the species models reports. These models cover the conterminous U.S. and were based on 2001 land cover conditions.
USGS Dam Removal Information Portal (DRIP)
A tool to explore trends about dam removal science and query scientific studies that evaluate environmental response to dam removals.
Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS)
The ITIS mission is to communicate a comprehensive taxonomy of global species that enables biodiversity information to be discovered, indexed, and connected across all human endeavors. Use the ITIS search, download, API, and web tools as a standardized reference of scientific names and their taxonomic hierarchy.
Species of Greatest Conservation Need Analysis Tool
Species of Greatest Conservation Need are lists of species designated in the 56 State Wildlife Action Plans which identify the species most in need of conservation action in that state or U.S. territory. USGS developed a process that allows these lists to be compiled into a national list, making their representation across taxa groups available via the Species Conservation Analysis Tool.
National Vegetation Classification Standard
The National Vegetation Classification (NVC) is your guide to inventorying plant communities. The standard allows users to produce uniform statistics about vegetation resources across the nation. CSAS&L actively participates in the development of this important standard through our involvement with the FGDC Vegetation Subcommittee and the ESA Vegetation Panel.
