Species richness and relative abundance of breeding birds in forests of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley Species richness and relative abundance of breeding birds in forests of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley

In 1992, the Vicksburg Field Research Station of the National Wetlands Research Center initiated research on the ecology of migratory birds within forests of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV). The MAV was historically a nearly contiguous bottomland hardwood forest, however, only remnants remain. These remnants are fragmented and often influenced by drainage projects, silviculture...

The 'robust' capture-recapture design allows components of recruitment to be estimated The 'robust' capture-recapture design allows components of recruitment to be estimated

The 'robust' capture-recapture design (Pollock 1982) allows analyses which combine features of closed population model analyses (Otis et aI., 1978, White et aI., 1982) and open population model analyses (Pollock et aI., 1990). Estimators obtained under these analyses are more robust to unequal catch ability than traditional Jolly-Seber estimators (Pollock, 1982; Pollock et al., 1990...

Radiocarbon ages from two submerged strandline features in the western Gulf of Maine and a sea-level curve for the northeastern Massachusetts coastal region Radiocarbon ages from two submerged strandline features in the western Gulf of Maine and a sea-level curve for the northeastern Massachusetts coastal region

New radiocarbon dates provide ages for two submerged strandline features on the Massachusetts inner shelf. These ages provide limited control on a relative sea-level (RSL) curve for the late Wisconsinan and Holocene. The curve indicates a late Wisconsinan high stand of RSL of +33 m about 14,000 yr ago and a very short-lived relative low stand of about -43 m at about 12,000 yr ago...

An in vitro technique for surveying immunostimulants in fish An in vitro technique for surveying immunostimulants in fish

In vitro assays were developed to investigate the effects of immunostimulants on leukocytes in spleen sections of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish spleens were divided, and individual sections were placed in 10 ml of tissue culture media and 0.1, 1, 10, or 100 μg/ml dilutions of Levamisole, QAC (quaternary ammonium compound), or ISK (a polypeptide). After 4 days of incubation...

Glucan injection or bath exposure given alone or in combination with a bacterin enhance the non-specific defence mechanisms in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Glucan injection or bath exposure given alone or in combination with a bacterin enhance the non-specific defence mechanisms in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Elevations in the non-specific defence mechanisms were noted after trout were injected or bathed in glucan solutions or in solutions containing the glucan combined with a bacterin, Y. ruckeri O-antigen. Periodic non-lethal blood samples showed that neutrophil activity as evaluated by the ability of the cells to stick to glass and produce oxidative radicals as detected by the nitroblue...

Effects of dietary selenium and vitamin E on red blood cell peroxidation, glutathione peroxidase activity, and macrophage superoxide anion production in channel catfish Effects of dietary selenium and vitamin E on red blood cell peroxidation, glutathione peroxidase activity, and macrophage superoxide anion production in channel catfish

Fingerling channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were fed purified diets either unsupplemented and deficient in both selenium and vitamin E, deficient in either selenium or vitamin E, adequate in both selenium (0.2 mg/kg) and vitamin E (60 mg/kg), or excessive in both nutrients (four times the recommended levels). After 115–120 d of feeding the experimental diets, the red blood cell...
