Progress in satellite tracking cranes Progress in satellite tracking cranes
We review the history of tracking cranes with satellite telemetry and identify some of the difficulties in designing satellite transmitters and harnesses for cranes. Miniaturization of these transmitters and a plethora of harnessing experiments since 1989 allow us to recommend limited application of this technology to all species of cranes. We are still uncertain, however, if cranes...

Recovery of benthic-invertebrate communities in the White River near Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, following implementation of advanced treatment of municipal wastewater Recovery of benthic-invertebrate communities in the White River near Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, following implementation of advanced treatment of municipal wastewater
The City of Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, completed construction of advanced-wastewater-treatment systems to enlarge and upgrade existing secondary-treatment processes at the City’s two municipal wastewater-treatment plants in 1983. These plants discharge their effluent to the White River. A study was begun in 1981 to evaluate the effects of municipal wastewater on the quality of the White...

Hormonal control of sulfate uptake by bronchial cartilage of coho salmon: Role of IGF-I Hormonal control of sulfate uptake by bronchial cartilage of coho salmon: Role of IGF-I
The direct hormonal control of sulfate uptake by cartilage matrix of coho salmon was examined by exposing branchial cartilage to 1 μCi · ml−1 35SO4 for 48 hours at 15°C in a defined medium. Sulfate uptake occurred primarily in cartilage (rather than bone) and the amount of specific uptake was similar in epibranchial and ceratobranchial cartilages. Intact and hypophysectomized coho salmon...

Mechanisms and function of school formation in subyearling American shad (Alosa sapidissima) Mechanisms and function of school formation in subyearling American shad (Alosa sapidissima)
Summary The behavioural repertoire of subyearling American shad (Alosa sapidissima) was studied in the laboratory to examine pathways leading to Aggregation and School formation at various group sizes (3–100 fish per 500-liter tank). Three hypotheses were tested: (1) schooling is the dominant behavioural activity of subyearling American shad, (2) development and maintenance of cohesive...

Lithology, stratigraphy, and paleoenvironments of the Mobil 312-1 well, Georges Bank Basin, US North Atlantic outer continental shelf Lithology, stratigraphy, and paleoenvironments of the Mobil 312-1 well, Georges Bank Basin, US North Atlantic outer continental shelf
The Mobil 312-1 hydrocarbon exploratory well, southeastern Georges Bank Basin penetrated a section entirely composed of sedimentary rocks that range from Middle to Pliocene age. Carbonates are the dominant lithologies in the intervals at 6096-3444 m, 2560-2096 m and 1067-887 m; siliciclastics make up most of the remaining section. Although inferred paleoenvironments range primarily from...
