Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 612 bolide event: New evidence of a late Eocene impact-wave deposit and a possible impact site, US east coast Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 612 bolide event: New evidence of a late Eocene impact-wave deposit and a possible impact site, US east coast

A remarkable >60-m-thick, upward-fining, polymictic, marine boulder bed is distributed over >15 000 km2 beneath Chesapeake Bay and the surrounding Middle Atlantic Coastal Plain and inner continental shelf. The wide varieties of clast lithologies and microfossil assemblages were derived from at least seven known Cretaceous, Paleocene, and Eocene stratigraphic units. The supporting pebbly...

Fe-Mn nodule field indicated by GLORIA, north of the Puerto Rico Trench Fe-Mn nodule field indicated by GLORIA, north of the Puerto Rico Trench

A 2,500-km2 area of sea floor on the south-eastern flank of the Greater Antilles Outer Ridge north of the Puerto Rico Trench displays anomalously high acoustic backscattering properties on GLORIA longrange sidescan-sonar data. Previously collected dredges, bottom photographs, and sediment cores indicate the presence of Fe-Mn nodules within the area of high backscatter. We were able to...

Depositional and tectonic framework of the rift basins of Lake Baikal from multichannel seismic data Depositional and tectonic framework of the rift basins of Lake Baikal from multichannel seismic data

Recent multichannel seismic reflection data from Lake Baikal, located in a large, active, continental rift in central Asia, image three major stratigraphic units totalling 3.5 to 7.5 km thick in four subbasins. A major change in rift deposition and faulting between the oldest and middle-rift units probably corresponds to the change from slow to fast rifting. A brief comparison of the...

Retention of visible implant tags in lake trout and Atlantic salmon Retention of visible implant tags in lake trout and Atlantic salmon

Retention and readability of visible implant (VI) tags were evaluated in adult (2‐yearold) Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), adult (4‐year‐old) lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), and yearling (10‐month‐old) fish of both species. Tags were implanted in adipose eyelid tissue posterior to the eye. After 10 months, retention in yearlings was 49% by Atlantic salmon and 41% by lake trout. In...

Determining sex of eastern screech-owls using discriminant function analysis Determining sex of eastern screech-owls using discriminant function analysis

Seven morphometric characteristics and weight of males and females of a captive colony of Eastern Screech-Owls (Otus asio) were compared. Females were significantly larger than males in weight, total length, and length of tail, wing and bill. A discriminant function analysis based on weight, wing and tail length correctly identified the sex of 88% of the 77 birds.

The impact of the introduction of the colubrid snake Boiga irregularis on Guam's lizards The impact of the introduction of the colubrid snake Boiga irregularis on Guam's lizards

The extirpation of Guam's forest avifauna has been attributed to the accidental introduction and subsequent irruption of the brown tree snake, Boiga irregularis. However, recent dietary studies of this nocturnal arboreal snake indicate that it now preys primarily on lizards, not birds. We evaluated the effect the snake has had on Guam's lizards by contrasting lizard communities on Guam...

Redhead duck behavior on lower Laguna Madre and adjacent ponds of southern Texas Redhead duck behavior on lower Laguna Madre and adjacent ponds of southern Texas

Behavior of redheads (Aythya americana) during winter was studied on the hypersaline lower Laguna Madre and adjacent freshwater to brackish water ponds of southern Texas. On Laguna Madre, feeding (46%) and sleeping (37%) were the most common behaviors. Redheads fed more during early morning (64%) than during the rest of the day (40%); feeding activity was negatively correlated with...

A study of the genetic relationships within and among wolf packs using DNA fingerprinting and mitochondrial DNA A study of the genetic relationships within and among wolf packs using DNA fingerprinting and mitochondrial DNA

DNA fingerprinting and mitochondrial DNA analyses have not been used in combination to study relatedness in natural populations. We present an approach that involves defining the mean fingerprint similarities among individuals thought to be unrelated because they have different mtDNA genotypes. Two classes of related individuals are identified by their distance in standard errors above...
